The café known as "La Restauration," now the Casino du Grand Café, was built by Charles Badger for the Compagnie Fermière de Vichy in 1870.
It originally included kitchens and cellars in the basement, a restaurant-coffee salon on the ground floor, private lounges, the manager's quarters, and a belvedere on the upper floor. Its main facade and a terrace covering nearly 5,000 m², enclosed by gates, faced north, towards the park.
From 1874 onwards, La Restauration's terrace, which could accommodate 4,000 customers, gained the additional attraction of a bandstand. In 1902, two rotundas were added to the west facade, providing comfortable spaces where visitors could play ludo and billiards. Open-air cinema screenings were held between 1906 and 1910.
In 1984, a partnership between the Compagnie Fermière and the City led to the café being redesigned by architect Philippe Martin, who notably created an exhibition space. The Partouche group has operated the Grand Café since 1991: in addition to its restaurant, it also offers games rooms that were removed from the Grand Casino during its conversion into a convention centre. The Grand Café Casino underwent a full renovation in 2025.
