Parc des Sources, 03200 Vichy
As early as the 18th century, there arose a need to develop a promenade area near the springs in response to doctors' recommendations to supplement the cures with physical exercise.
It was not until the beginning of the 19th century, though, that the land acquisitions necessary for the creation of the Parc des Sources were made following a request from Letizia Bonaparte, mother of the future Napoleon I, who took the waters in Vichy in 1799. This promenade, connecting the Chomel and Grande-Grille springs to the north, to the Hôpital spring to the south, was completed by decree of Napoleon I in 1812. The park quickly became the spa town's main social hub, around which it organised its urban development: the thermal baths and casino were located at each end, with hotels and boutiques soon filling the space in between. To protect spa visitors from the weather and excessive exposure to the sun, the perimeter was covered with a promenade gallery designed by wrought iron master craftsman Émile Robert in 1898. The park's appearance changed again in 1928 with the addition of a concrete pergola in front of the Hall des Sources; the three main pathways were cemented over and lined with red brick. More recently, the Parc des Sources underwent a major renovation project, completed in 2025. A successful blend of tradition and modernity, it restored the presence of water features and addressed environmental issues.
