On January 6, 1568, in the midst of the religious war, Cognat-Lyonne was the scene of a deadly battle.
The Protestant army, led by François de Boucé, Lord of Poncenat, had just ransacked part of Vichy. They came face to face with the army of the lord of Cognat, Hautefeuille, at the foot of the hill where the church still stands today.
